How to use SSH on a Mac

Category: Technical & Security
Keywords: SSH MACYou will need stuffit expander or some other decompression tool. This is on most macs, if not, you can find this on http://www.versiontracker.com

Download Jellyfish to your favorite download directory:

http://www.arenasoftware.com/grepsoft/

Expand this, then install it. /Applications would be fine, or anywhere else.

Then find the icon in Finder, and then drag it to the dock, if you use this. Open Jellyfish.

You can then create a bookmark, or just enter the info every time you want to ssh.

To create a bookmark:

Put the title of the bookmark in the "Bookmark Title" area.

Input the IP or domain name (mydomain.com for example) into the "Hostname or IP" box

Put the username for your login into the "Login Name" area.

Change shell to /bin/bash, /bin/tcsh is default for OS X (I personally don't notice much of a difference, it's more for scripting) and /bin/bash is the default for linux, hence you use it for this.

Leave "Type" to SSH 2 and "Encryption" to 3des.

Change the Terminal settings to your preferences.

Click "Add" at the bottom left hand. Once it saves, you can click the "Connect" button.

-----------------

OS 9

A lot of people use Nifty Telnet (I don't use 9, I'm using classic right now just to look at the settings), but here is a whole list just in case you need it:

http://www.versiontracker.com/mp/new_searc...acOS&search=ssh

Get Nifty Telnet downloaded, then expand it. Open Nifty Telnet 1.1.1 SSH R3

You now want to click the new button at the bottom right. Now, fill in the information as specified,

Shortcut Name is what you should name this connection

Then put in the domain name or ip in the "Host Name" area.

Then, in the protocal drop down, choose either "SSH -- 3DES" or "SSH -- Blowfish" both are good sized encryption, although I believe that blowfish is a little better.

Change font and everything else how you like, then click the save as button, then it'll save it, then you can connect to this from now on.

You're done.
